The W58 was the first modern telephone from the Deutsche Post in the GDR. GDR stands for German Democratic Republic. Germany was divided after the Second World War. The GDR was in the east of Germany. The GDR existed from 1945 to 1990.

The Hochschule in Weißensee made the phone with the Deutsche Post. The telephone has a clear and simple shape. The model for the design of the telephone was Bauhaus. Bauhaus is the name of the most famous school of architecture, design and art in the 20th century.
