4 Museums – 1 Modernism

A joint exhibition of all 4 museums of the Pinakothek der Moderne

About the exhibition

Die Neue Sammlung has existed for 100 years now.
Pinakothek der Moderne celebrates this
with a joint exhibition of its 4 museums:
• Bayerische Staats-Gemälde-Sammlungen:
Sammlung Moderne Kunst mit Stiftung Ann und Jürgen Wilde
In English, this means:
Bavarian State Painting Collections:
Modern Art Collection together with Ann and Jürgen Wilde Foundation
• Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München
In English, this means:
State Graphic Collection Munich
• Architektur-Museum der Technischen Universität München (TUM)
In English, this means:
Architecture Museum of the Technical University of Munich (TUM)
• Die Neue Sammlung – The Design Museum

Die Neue Sammlung was the first design museum in Germany
that was founded by the German state.
The beginnings of Die Neue Sammlung are closely linked
to the beginning of Classical Modernism.

Classical Modernism is a period in art.
It was the time shortly before the First World War
until the Second World War.
Modernism had an impact on many different fields:
on architecture, on design and on fine arts.
Painting and making sculptures are examples of fine arts.

Die Neue Sammlung is celebrating
its 100th anniversary this year.
That is why the 4 museums of Pinakothek der Moderne
organise a joint exhibition.
They have chosen special objects from their collections
that are characteristic of modernist art.

In the period between the two world wars,
the situation in politics was very instable.
Also, society and technology were changing very quickly.
This had a great impact on art and
on people’s idea of what is beautiful.
You could also say: New aesthetics were created during this time.
Aesthetics is about how we see beauty.

At that time, artists simplified their art a lot and
they used simple shapes.
This is called abstract art.

Before that, art showed things in a more beautiful way
than they actually were.
Modernist art, however, showed reality
which is often not that beautiful.

Simple shapes, little decoration, and usefulness:
that is what was important back then.
Modernist art also had a great impact on crafts and industry.
With their designs, artists, and craftspeople
changed society and the view of humans.

The exhibition is organised like the figure 4,
because Pinakothek der Moderne consists of 4 museums.
There are 4 different themes that have 4 different colours.
These are the 4 themes:
– New Aesthetics
– New Materials and Techniques
– New Society
– New Institutions
The exhibition objects in these 4 areas form a unit.

You can see more objects of modernist art in these rooms:
Die Neue Sammlung and Sammlung Moderne Kunst.
The objects there have special labels.

The design of architecture in the exhibition is by Martin Kinzlmaier.

These organisations supported the exhibition:
• Bavarian State Ministry for Science and Art
• PIN, Friends of the Pinakothek der Moderne
• Allianz
