This is a relief created by Ferdinand Günter Ris. First, vertical metal rods are placed in a black wooden frame: Onto each of them, seven square pieces of green, blue, or white-colored porcelain are threaded. The modular arrangement of the tiles gives rise to different color patterns; owing to the threading, the slats can be moved. Depending on how each individual glazed tile is turned, a shadow play evolves. The German sculptor is renowned for his interest in light and for translating two-dimensional surfaces into well-defined three-dimensional sculptures. To produce this relief, Ris collaborated with one of the oldest German porcelain makers, Rosenthal GmbH, which was founded in 1879 in Upper Franconia in Southern Germany. Since 2009, the company has been part of the Italian Sambonet Paderno group.
