This bicycle frame is made of carbon. The material is based on an industrially manufactured carbonic raw substance and is transformed by chemical reactions. Carbon is very light, simple to mold, and nevertheless stable. Ross Lovegrove recognized these advantages when making the prototype of his Biolove Carbon bicycle. The shape of the extraordinary frame is defined by his design principle – Lovegrove always takes his cue from organic forms (see also his Moot chair on Shelf 10). In addition, the bicycle’s pedals and handlebars fold inwards for transportation; the chain casing prevents the cyclist’s clothes from getting dirty.

As a designer, Lovegrove is renowned for rejecting mass production and for insisting on a reduction of materials and shapes for his own products. The upper gap in the curved frame is not only aesthetic but also practical: by using less material the bicycle is lighter and the gap means it can also be hung on the wall like a sculpture.
