Graphic design from Studio “Morcos Key”

Morcos Key brings together two incredible perspectives and represents a model for how a contemporary design studio can create vital work that gives visibility to underrepresented communities.

You can see a poster of a woman spread out on a black table. The poster has a white, Arabic font and an abstract background of blue, pink and red.
Poster. Designed by Wael Morcos and Khajag Apelian to celebrate the release of the Lyon Arabic typeface, an extension of the Lyon family by Kai Bernau.

The studio works with a variety of arts and cultural institutions, nonprofits, and companies in both North America and the Middle East, providing services as varied as brand strategy, Latin and Arabic type design, and book design, to name a few.

You can see several printed products lying on a table. Two hands with black rubber gloves are aligning one of the booklets. They are all red, white and blue with lettering.
Brochure: Graphik Arabic Typeface and the sample booklet were designed by Wael Morcos and Khajag Apelian in 2017 and also published in 2017.

The Arabic aims to be a meaningful departure from calligraphic detailing and presents a utilitarian workhorse with a plain style. Newsprint: I WANT SKY collects prose, poems, and hybrid work celebrating Egyptian activist Sarah Hegazy and honors the lives of all LGBTQ+ Arabs and people of the SWANA region and its diaspora. Morcos Key conceptualized and designed this special print edition that took the form of a newsprint.

Booklet: Graphik Arabic Typeface and the specimen booklet were designed by Wael Morcos and Khajag Apelian (@khajag) in 2017, released also in 2017 by @commercialtype. Softcover, 48 pages. The typeface Graphik Arabic combines the simplified strokes of a grotesque with the structure and proportion of a fluid script.

The publication was made by @mizna_arabart + @aaww_nyc
